A Story for B

One morning Brandon woke up to a loud B-B-B-B sound. He walked over to the window and looked down. He saw his big brother, Bobby, sitting on a brand new bike (motorbike). Bobby had a broad smile on his face as he checked and listened to the B-B-B-B of the engine. Brandon opened the window, held onto the frame, and shouted down, "Can I have a ride?" Bobby looked up and nodded his head slowly. Brandon quickly dressed and ran downstairs. He grabbed his black helmet before going out the back door. Bobby was sitting up proudly on his new bike, giving it gas and listening to the lip popping B-B-B-B of the engine. Brandon climbed on back and held tightly to his big brother’s waist. He was glad he ad a big brother and hoped that one day he could have a new bike too.

Instructional material:

  1. Can you make the sound of the bike? (B-B-B-B) Let’s pretend we’re bikes and make the lip popping sound B-B-B-B. Some words have a /b/ sound at the beginning, like bus, bat, bell, and book. Let’s go back through our story and see how many /b/ words we can find.

  2. The class generates a list of /b/ words:

List of /b/ words:

boots birthday baseball builder barn
backpack bill bear butter bookcase
ball baker belt bowl bank
babysitter bucket bird bell box
bracelet balloon blocks baby blue
  1. Review vocabulary from "A Story for B" and list of /b/ words for semantic content.

Practice material:

  1. Have the students cover a B with beans. Use sturdy paper. Let the students apply glue and place beans on the glue.

  2. Make a bead bracelet. Use pipe cleaners and slide on beads. Encourage the students to use patterns when making the bracelet (i.e. red, blue, green, red, blue, green, etc.)

  3. Complete a worksheet. Make a worksheet with /b/ pictures and a few foils on it. Give the directions to draw a box around all the pictures that begin with the /b/ sound.

  4. Play a guessing game. Have each student bring in a baby picture. Write the names on the back. Pick one picture at a time and see who can identify the student as a baby. Give clues if needed (girl/boy). After the game, make a "Beautiful Baby Bulletin Board".

Whole Language Application:

Help each student make a patterned one sheet book to take home and read to his or her family.

Title: My Birthday

Pattern: When I am one, on my birthday I would like a box.

When I am two, on my birthday I would like a ball.

When I am three, on my birthday I would like a bell.

When I am four, on my birthday I would like a book.

When I am five, on my birthday I would like a backpack.
